Stephens cruises past Mertens and into U.S. Open quarters

Sloane Stephens US Open

Anastasia Sevastova in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open unexpectedly beat last year's champion of the tournament, Sloane Stephens.

The American lost 6-2, 6-3 to the Latvian in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

"I think it was very physical today. It was too hot to play tennis", he joked.

She finished the match with 13 aces and will take on Anastasija Sevastova for a place in the final after the 19th-seeded Latvian toppled defending champion Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-3.

Sevastova, who retired from tennis in 2013 due to injuries before returning in 2015, almost let Stephens into the match in the second set as the American twice pulled back on serve at 2-1 and again at 4-3, but the fightback proved short-lived.

"Well, it definitely means a lot for me, and I always thought if I were to win a Grand Slam, the first one I'd want to win is the US Open, because I have grown up here and, like, then my grandparents can come and watch", she said.

Colin Kaepernick Nike ad riles President Trump
On Monday, Williams, 36, tweeted a Nike ad of a young girl playing tennis that read, "It's only a insane dream until you do it". Trump chimed in on Twitter on Wednesday , saying Nike was "getting absolutely killed with anger and boycotts".

If Monday was "prime-time upset time" when Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova wilted under the sweltering heat, fans had more reason to cheer on Tuesday after Serena Williams defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-3.

Stephens and Mertens met for the first time 17 days ago in Cincinnati, with Mertens winning in two sets. "It's not every day you play semi-finals of a grand slam". Stephens gave credit to her opponent, Sevastova saying "It's hard match and I though she played solid today and obviously the better player won".

Now comes a rematch: She'll face No. 19 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, the same person she beat in last year's quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows.

This is her first win against a top-10 player since returning from maternity leave.

After her maiden Grand Slam triumph Stephens didn't win another match in 2017. For his part, Federer has not played poorly; he made it to the final in Cincinnati just before the start here in NY but was overwhelmed by a surging Novak Djokovic.

But Tsurenko said she was sick Wednesday, waking up with a sore throat and not breathing well. So I'm not going to dwell on it. He took the first set in 24 minutes and converted six break points to Nadal's five.

Maravilla also created a fake security badge identifying himself as a "regional interior coordinator" by the name of Jeff Bergara. In an interview with Click2Houston website, Maravilla said he and his friends were inspired by " Crazy Rich Asians ".

Sevastova's creative play makes for a great matchup with Stephens, as their intense, three-set battle here previous year demonstrated. She received a wild card into last year's U.S. Open and became the youngest player ever to make the girls' final.

Stephens takes the tack that she isn't exactly defending a title. Even when I did have my break opportunities, I just wasn't playing the points well at all.

He added "I'm so happy to reach another semi-final in my favourite tournament".

"There's four more tournaments left".

"I lost my nerves a little bit", Sevastova admitted.
