Florida Child Killed After Tropical Storm Gordon Strikes Land

CNN Breaking News

Tropical Storm Gordon weakened after making landfall just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border and lashing the Gulf Coast with high winds and heavy rain on Tuesday night, the United States National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said.

Gordon's top sustained winds were down to 40 mph as its tight core moved about 20 miles northwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Tropical-storm force winds were already lashing the Alabama and western Florida panhandle coastlines and were predicted to reach hurricane force of at least 74 miles per hour (119 kph) by the time storm makes landfall.

Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast just before 10 p.m.

The center predicted total rain amounts of 4-8 inches (10-20 centimeters) in the Florida panhandle and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL. Scattered showers and storms will remain in the forecast Wednesday as Gordon pulls away, leaving our area on the southeast side of the storm and returning an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico.

Wednesday Morning: After churning up the state of MS through the overnight, Gordon has been downgraded to a tropical depression following the most recent update from the NHC. On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, 12 casinos in Biloxi and Gulfport were ordered closed Tuesday ahead of Gordon's approach, but all had reopened by early Wednesday. But Mayor Latoya Cantrell says they are prepared.
