Nadal sets-up Thiem clash at US Open

Denis Shapovalov of Canada reacts after being defeated by Kevin Anderson of South Africa during the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament Friday Aug. 31 2018 in New York

Defending champion Rafa Nadal failed to win a single game in the opening set of his US Open quarter-final against Dominic Thiem but fought back to beat the Austrian 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5) in match that ended past 2 am.in NY.

Basilashvili, ranked 37, had won just a single game against Nadal in their only previous meeting at the French Open a year ago but played superbly here, especially in the third-set tie-break.

When asked if he suffered during the match, Nadal said: "That's the right word".

After the match, Nadal reflected, "He was hitting the ball very strong, it felt like I wasn't controlling the points".

Basilashvili is now ranked 37th, and held his own against the world number one on Sunday. While Shapovalov had almost twice the amount of winners (59 to Anderson's 31), he had 10 more unforced errors (42 to 32) which played into his inability to break Anderson's serve. There was no let-up in the tie-break and, after four hours and 49 minutes, it was Nadal who claimed victory when Thiem sent a smash long.

The opening set was only the fourth time in 282 career Grand Slam matches that Nadal lost a set 6-0 and this was the first time he had been victorious after doing so.

Malaysia: Two women caned and fined for attempting to have sex
Just yesterday (Sept 3), two Muslim women were caned in public for attempting sexual acts on each other three weeks ago. The women , ages 22 and 32, were caned by a female prison officer, Malaysian news outlets reported.

Nadal ran into an inspired opponent for the second match in a row and was put through his paces by Nikoloz Basilashvili before eventually coming through 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

Last year, he had two match points against Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round but fell to the Argentine in five sets.

Thiem's progress to the last eight comes despite choosing to play European clay court events after Wimbledon before then losing his only summer hard court outing in Cincinnati to Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.

Rafael Nadal is back in the US Open quarterfinals, and he won't face a rematch of the 2017 final.

The opener looked to be heading for a tiebreak before Del Potro dispatched a backhand volley to earn himself two more break points in the 10th game.

Now Thiem will try to beat Nadal for the fourth time, saying of their previous matches: "It was three very nice experiences and six disgusting experiences".

Rogic's Celtic overcome Gerrard's Rangers in Scotland
He said: "I didn't see it as a foul". "We still have a lot of work to do breaking away, it was very impressive". We believe if we turn up we can beat anyone - especially at Celtic Park.

"On clay, I think it's one of the biggest challenges in sports to beat this guy or to compete with this guy".

The fifth world-ranked Anderson had also boasted a 6-1 record against Thiem on hard courts.

Nadal will next play third seed Juan Martin Del Potro for a place in the final.

"There were a lot of ups and downs in the match".

"I was really close past year, I couldn't close it out", said Thiem, who offered thanks to an appreciative Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd.

Isner, the 11th seed, is attempting to become the first home victor since Andy Roddick in 2003.

He is 1-1 against Coric. "But anyway it's a good stat, it's something positive, it's something that shows I've been competitive on all surfaces in practically all the weeks I've played this year, and I'm happy about it". But why not me?
