Japan braces for strike from powerful typhoon

Map of Typhoon Jebi

If it maintains its current strength of 216 kilometres (135 miles) per hour, Jebi would be the first "very strong" typhoon to make landfall on Japan since 1993, according to the country's weather bureau.

The threat of more floods and landslides comes soon after parts of Japan were hit by torrential rains that killed more than 200 people in July.

More than 700 flights were canceled, along with scores of ferries and trains, NHK said.

Few passengers can be seen due to the approaching of typhoon Jebi at Osaka Station.

A powerful typhoon blew through western Japan on Tuesday, causing heavy rain to flood the region's main offshore global airport and high winds to blow a tanker into a connecting bridge, disrupting land and air travel.

U.S. cuts Pakistan aid over lack of 'decisive actions' against terror groups
The loss of funds would not hurt the army immediately, Tariq said, but might affect its ability to replace ageing equipment. He added: "We continue to press Pakistan to indiscriminately target all terrorist groups".

Evacuation advisories were issued for some 280,000 people as the wind and rain began picking up. A total of 585 domestic and 13 worldwide flights were cancelled, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pulled out of a planned trip to Fukuoka in the southern island of Kyushu, to deal with the disaster response. At the airport itself, one runway was under water and one terminal's basement was flooded, an airport spokesman said.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe convened an emergency meeting and called on people "to take action to protect your lives, including preparing and evacuating early".

Jebi is the fourth typhoon to make landfall in Japan this season.

He instructed his cabinet to "take all measures possible".

A fallen tree from strong winds lies on Midosuji street in central Osaka on September 4, 2018, as Typhoon Jebi made landfall around midday in southwestern Japan.

China's Belt and Road project runs into debt jam
Beijing is increasingly facing criticism over its debt-heavy projects overseas . Besides energy, Zimbabwe and China are cooperating in various other sectors.

Local media warned that the wind was strong enough to topple traditional-style wooden houses and power poles, and urged people in affected areas to avoid non-essential travel.

Elsewhere in Osaka, the Universal Studios Japan theme park and U.S. Consulate were both closed.

Footage from the storm making landfall showed giant waves crashing against the coastline and flying debris.

More rain might be welcome in other parts of Japan, which has also been sweating through a deadly heat wave.

It has already left tens of thousands without power and authorities have urged people to move to safety.
