Zimbabwe opposition rejects ruling and 'false' inauguration

Zimbabwe election appeal

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa at a news conference at State House in Harare, Zimbabwe, August 3, 2018.

Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court on Friday upheld President Emmerson Mnangagwa's re-election win last month after his opposition's allegations of fraud.

The Chief Justice said the court arrived at ruling after noting that Chamisa, with whom the burden of providing evidence lies, made general allegations with no substantial proof of evidence.

Lawyers for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) launched a blistering attack on the ruling Zanu-PF party and the election commission over the July 30 ballot - Zimbabwe's first election since the ousting of Robert Mugabe a year ago.

Mnangagwa, of the ruling ZANU-PF party, won the election with 50.8 percent of the vote - just enough to pass the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff against Chamisa, who finished second with 44.3 percent.

His inauguration is on Sunday.

In a statement, the European Union urged all parties to "call for calm and restraint" after the court ruling.

Last month's election, the first since Robert Mugabe was removed as President in a November coup, was expected to pull Zimbabwe out of its diplomatic isolation, end worldwide sanctions and prompt an economic recovery.

THE MDC Alliance was Friday left licking its wounds after the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) sealed its fate with a poll challenge judgement that exposed how the country's main opposition lacked tact in dealing with its tough opponent. "It is time to build our nation and move forward together".

Security is tight in the capital, Harare, as the court will determine whether President Emmerson Mnangagwa's narrow victory is valid.

Chamisa's comments will do little to ease tension in a country that has been caught up in disputed polls since the MDC contested its first election in 2000.

"Let us put whatever differences we might have behind us".

Chamisa responded with skepticism, saying the opposition had reached out to Mnangagwa for dialogue earlier but the president did not respond.

The court said it was up to the opposition to prove its claims and it failed to do so, saying the best evidence would have been the content of the sealed ballot boxes, but that route was not pursued.

Zimbabwe's electoral commission declared Mnangagwa the victor three days after voting with 50.8 percent of the vote.

I once again reiterate my call for peace and unity above all.

He said the MDC Alliance failed to make use of the constitutional provisions which allows an aggrieved party to seek a recount within 48 hours after the announcement of the Presidential election results.

Campaigning was more open and peaceful than previous votes under Mugabe.
