Trump Rails Against Mueller Calling Obstruction a 'Phony Crime'

US President Donald Trump has stepped up his attacks on special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election likening it to

President Trump, in an exclusive Reuters interview on Monday (Aug 20), said he was anxious that speaking under oath in a sit-down interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller could result in perjury charges against him.

When news of the meeting surfaced after Trump became president, he dictated a misleading statement about the talks, claiming they were about adoption of Russian children.

The President was unsettled by the notion that he didn't know everything McGahn said to the special counsel during their interviews, the sources said.

Once privilege is waived, Mr. McGahn couldn't decide to answer, say, what Mr. Trump told him about Attorney General Jeff Sessions but refuse to discuss the President's state of mind when he fired James Comey at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Among those questioning the former Trump lawyers' tactics is former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, also a former US attorney.

Man charged in Tibbetts' death was working in Iowa legally, lawyer says
The killing has recharged the U.S. debate over illegal immigration after it emerged the suspect was Mexican. When police arrested him on Friday, Rivera made a full confession and told them he had seen Mollie before.

But Giuliani also seemed to indicate that he was relying on secondhand information, from Trump's former personal attorney John Dowd, to determine the extent of what McGahn had shared with Mueller's team. NPR White House correspondent Tamara Keith joins us now to explain all of this. This included Trump's comments and actions during the firing of the F.B.I. director James B. Comey, Trump's attempt to ensure control of the investigation and his obsession with putting someone loyal in charge of the inquiry.

President accuses Democrats of using the special counsel to impact midterm elections; Kevin Corke reports from the White House. But the Times followed up with another report saying Trump's lawyers do not know how much McGahn told investigators during months of interviews spanning 30 hours. He says that was the legal strategy of President Trump's previous legal team.

After the story was published on Saturday, Mr. Trump tweeted that he had told White House staff to cooperate.

"I'm totally allowed to be involved if I wanted to be".

KEITH: Yes, exactly. And one thing that we learned from the Watergate experience was that - or what was settled by it is that the White House counsel represents the presidency, not the person. But it said another motivation was McGahn's fear he could be placed in legal jeopardy because of decisions made in the White House that could be construed as obstruction of justice.

Boyle then reiterated that he and Hodge hoped the powers that be would "like" the script they were working on. Craig has previously starred in Casino Royale , Quantum Of Solace , Skyfall and Spectre .

Trump lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani recently told the Wall Street Journal that Trump would not sit for an interview after September 1 because it might interfere with the midterm elections in November.

Jens David Ohlin, a professor of criminal law at Cornell University, said that even if McGahn told investigators he thought Trump acted lawfully his testimony would still be pivotal.

Mr Giuliani said: "The president encouraged him to testify, is happy that he did, is quite secure that there is nothing in the testimony that will hurt the president".

"I reached out to my old friend John Dean because of what he went through with Watergate, and I saw some parallels to what Michael Cohen is experiencing", Davis told Politico.

The president asserted that he'd given McGahn "approval" to meet with investigators and sought to discredit Mueller and his team.
