Former Illini star Kevin Anderson ousts Roger Federer at Wimbledon

He missed the second half of last season with an elbow injury.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands' return to Wimbledon won't get a flawless ending.

Eighth-seed Anderson completed an audacious comeback against the unlikeliest of foes to suffer one at SW19 on Wednesday when he turned a two-set deficit around to emerge the victor in a four-hour struggle. Anderson then saved three break points, hitting an ace to force a fourth set.

Anderson will now face American John Isner in his first semi-final at the grass court Grand Slam event.

Federer couldn't convert a break point at 3-4 and as the final set headed into extra time a lone voice in the crowd, mindful of England's imminent World Cup semifinal against Croatia, shouted out "Hurry up I need to watch the football". There is no doubt that Federer will bounce back from this quickly.

Anderson admitted he was "unsettled" in the opening exchanges, but though two sets down, with his serve under-par, Anderson then re-tuned and started to cause Federer all sorts of trouble, both with his serve and from the baseline.

Anderson staved off Federer's first and only attempt at match point, trailing 5-4 in the third set, before winning the game to tie the set at 5-5 and ultimately winning the next game to take a 6-5 lead.

In the end, it just wasn't meant to be Roger Federer's year at Wimbledon.

Chairman, at no time in any of these texts did those personal beliefs ever enter into the realm of any action I took". Army captain who was killed in Iraq in 2004. "This investigation is not politically motivated", Strzok said.

The only other times he has surrendered a two-set lead came against Lleyton Hewitt in Switzerland's 2003 Davis Cup semi-final loss to Australia in Melbourne, to David Nalbandian in the 2005 Masters Cup decider. And, according to the ATP, it's the fifth time Federer lost a match at a major after holding a match point, something else that last happened seven years ago.

It wasn't till the end of the third set, however, that Anderson's resolve came into play.

He said: "Beating Federer at Wimbledon will be one I'm going to remember, especially in such a close match".

Nadal has made the quarter-finals for the first time since finishing runner-up to Djokovic in 2011. German Julia Görges and two-time Grand Slam victor Angelique Kerber vs. 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

"It feels great to be in the last four of a Slam", Djokovic said afterwards.

Roger Federer found it hard to explain his shock quarter-final loss to South African Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The turning point came late in the third set.

Kevin Anderson, a former University of IL tennis player and the eighth-seed in this year's Wimbledon men's singles tournament, knocked out the top seed Roger Federer in five sets on Wednesday morning.

The Rockets are among the teams that Anthony is reportedly interested in playing for, though money could be an issue. If he joined the Heat, he could slot in at power forward in a frontcourt with Hassan Whiteside and Josh Richardson.

Many are already anticipating a Sunday final between Federer and Nadal, 10 years after their 2008 epic championship showdown widely regarded as the greatest final ever played. The top-seed breezed into the quarterfinals and won by 6-0 7-5 6-4.

The setting was not the only thing alien to the defending champion.

"I think the first warning was unnecessary", said Djokovic, who was sanctioned in the second set for spearing his racquet into the court.

Federer was playing on Court One for the first time in three years, but the 20-time Grand Slam champion denied his surprise move from Centre Court was a factor.

It proved pivotal as the South African recovered to win 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 in four hours and 13 minutes.

Boris Becker said Anderson had played the "game of his life" and, to many, will be known as the man who ended Federer's run. It is the first time since 2015 that the eight-time champion will play away from Centre Court.

Nishikori, who had won only two matches in 15 meetings with the 12-time major victor, broke for 1-0 in the fourth but was broken straight back.

Now the 32-year-old South African moves on to face number nine John Isner of the U.S. on Friday.
