Women Protest Immigration Policy with Message Directed at Melania Trump: "We Care"

WASHINGTON DC- JUNE 28 Protesters march from Freedom Plaza to demonstrate against family detentions and to demand the end of criminalizing efforts of asylum seekers and immigrants

Protesters were processed on site and released, according to a statement from Capitol Police. Jayapal was issued a $50 fine for "crowding, obstructing, or incommoding".

About 100 people were arrested at the protest in the Senate building, but CNN reported that Capitol Police are expecting to arrest "a couple of hundred". "I realized I had to do something more than protest, more than make a sign and march".

After Donald Trump announced his zero-tolerance policy on illegal border crossing in April, around 2,300 children were separated from their families. The officers said the protesters could have demonstrated outside but were arrested for being inside.

Several hundred activists gathered for an act of "mass civil disobedience" in the US capital on Thursday ahead of weekend protests across the country against the Trump administration's immigration policy.

President Trump is spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., and won't be home during the protest.

Protesters at the sit-in also chanted "We care!" in a likely nod to the olive-green jacket worn by first lady Melania Trump on the flight to visit children at the border last week, which said on the back "I really don't care, do u?"

In the days it took organizers to plan Saturday's event, the Trump administration reversed its policy of separating migrant children from their parents and was ordered by a judge to reunite immigrant families within a month. "Not in our name", she tweeted.
