Library Association Removes Laura Ingalls Wilder's Name From Award

Now, nearly 70 years after that first complaint, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, has voted unanimously to remove Laura Ingalls Wilder's name from an award given annually to authors and illustrators who have made a "significant and long-lasting contribution to children's literature".

The ALSC said that the Little House on the Prairie books which were written in the 1930s and 1940s include "expressions of stereotypical attitudes inconsistent with ALSC's core values". "Only Indians lived there", implied that Native Americans were not people-in response, the publisher then changed "people" to "settlers".

Wilder was the first to win the award in 1954, when she was in her late 80s and nearing the end of her life.

ROGERS, Ark. - Nasa Hataoka and Minjee Lee each shot a 6-under 65 to share the second-round lead in the NW Arkansas Championship. It was a bit of a squirrelly round, figuratively and literally, for Rory McIlroy.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder award will now be known as the Children's Literature Legacy Award. The name has been changed to the Children's Literature Legacy Award.

It was followed by Little House on the Prairie in 1935, On the Banks of Plum Creek in 1937 and By the Shores of Silver Lake in 1939. At the forefront of the argument is her handling of black and Native American characters, both in namecalling and characterization.

Wilder, who was born in 1867 and died in 1957, has apologized for some of her thoughtless phrasings, even amended a line in "Little House on the Prairie" that read Kansas had 'no people, only Indians.' It now reads, 'no settlers, only Indians'.

SCOTUS rules states can collect taxes from online shopping transactions
While this ruling is beneficial to state governments, it stands to have a negative impact on retailers and consumers alike. We asked some vendors of sales-tax services for their advice. "They've been getting an unfair advantage for 20 years".

A number of commentators disagreed with the change, with one, history and economics author Lori Ann LaRocco, saying Wilder "inspired me to be an author and to be fearless".

A letter from the ALSC board noted the "complexity" of the issue and "the emotion surrounding it", and also acknowledged Wilder's books "have been deeply painful to many readers". More than once, her neighbors repeat that infamous slur, the only good Indian is a dead Indian.

Director of Chicago's American Indian Center, Heather Miller, said she read the books during childhood, and didn't see her ethnicity reflected in the stories. The racial content in her books "should be discussed in our modern perspective and addressed directly", the group said, "rather than hidden or avoided". She wrote that they smelled of skunk, had hard, glittering eyes and came constantly to the little house demanding food and tobacco.
