On Monday, the USA military said it killed 49 members of al-Shabaab in three separate airstrike over a period of 12 days.

A US Africa Commander said US troops with Somalian and Kenyan forces came under mortar and small-arms fire in Jubaland, Somalia on Friday.

One member of the "partner forces" was wounded along with four other U.S. troops.

The US military says one US special operations soldier has been killed and four US service members wounded in an "enemy attack" in Somalia.

Africa Command said the combined US, Somali and Kenyan force included some 800 troops and was part of a mission in the area tasked with setting up a permanent combat outpost when they came under attack.

The Islamic militant group, al-Shabab, claimed responsibility for the attack friday that killed one USA service member and wounded four others.

The operation is aimed to clear the Somalia-based extremist group al-Shabab from contested areas.

Hundreds of American troops now serve in Somalia.

The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab rural south and central regions, claimed responsibility. The last killing of a USA service member in Somalia was in May 2017 during an operation about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Mogadishu.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased soldier in a tweet.

Trump shouldn't pardon himself: Paul Ryan
Can a president pardon himself? I don't know why we're walking through hypotheticals here in this process. You gotta change the dynamic and put the pressure on them", Giuliani said.

Al-Shabab was forced out of the capital, Mogadishu, in August 2011 following an offensive spearheaded by African Union (AU) troops, and left the vital port of Kismayo in September 2012. "Three U.S. service members and the one partner force wounded were medically evacuated to receive additional treatment". The US had pulled out of the country after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets.

The US said no civilians were killed during the strikes.

The names of the soldiers have not been released while the US notifies next of kin.

The role of U.S. troops during the operation was to provide aerial surveillance and to provide other assistance to the coalition group.

It follows the death of four United States soldiers in Niger last October in an ambush attack that raised questions about the continuing role of American forces in Africa. A Pentagon investigation of the incident produced a highly critical report.
