Facebook is shutting down its notorious 'trending' feature

In January, Facebook changed the News Feed to prioritize posts from friends, family members and groups over posts from publishers and brands.

Facebook is done with Trending, though.

Despite the efforts, conservatives are still targeting Facebook and other technology companies. "From research we found that over time people found the product to be less and less useful", Facebook said in a blog post, which said Trending will be gone next week.

In place of the Trending section, Facebook will focus on delivering high quality, reliable news via mobile and video, areas where it's seen users gravitate to get their news fix. During CEO Mark Zuckerberg's recent hearings before the US Congress and European Union parliament, purported prejudice against conservative-leaning posts was repeatedly brought up by lawmakers.

Drake Did Blackface for Clothing Line to Showcase ‘Powerful Duality’ of Race
Add to that the fact the new Kanye West record is expected to drop as early as this week - and he is not afraid to speak his mind. The image accompanying the track was a picture of the Toronto rapper in blackface, which is all types of yikes.

However, the "Trending" section in particular has been a source of concern ever since the company fired its Trending editors, leaving the selection of stories to its algorithms.

Facebook is finally killing the Trending news box after operating it for just about four years.

The social network announced this morning it's removing its often controversial "Trending" section from its site next week, in order to make way for "future news experiences", it says. And, because algorithms are not flawless, they repeatedly goofed up, allowing fake news stories to spread across the network by highlighting factually inaccurate links that were going viral as well as other inappropriate content.

"There are other ways for us to better invest our resources", Hardiman told the AP. More problematic was the feature's tendency to spread fake news, particularly during the 2016 presidential election, The Associated Press noted.

Flanking Zidane at the press conference, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said the decision was "completely unexpected". Zidane, 46, joined Real Madrid in 2016 when he replaced Rafael Benitez before leading the team to their 11 Europeam trophy.

According to Hardiman, Facebook will soon have a dedicated section on Facebook Watch in the US where people can view live coverage, daily news briefings and weekly features that will be exclusive to Watch.

Finally, the company is betting big on its video platform Facebook Watch, where it plans to host live coverage, daily news briefings, and weekly news recaps that are exclusive to the platform.

Testing is underway for a "breaking news" label with 80 news publishers worldwide, said the company.

Another feature, called "Today In", shows people breaking news in their area from local publishers, officials and organizations.
