British nationals kidnapped in DR Congo released unharmed

A group of park rangers pause in front of a field post in Virunga National Park

UK Foreign Office said on Sunday that the two British tourists being held hostage in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had been released.

"I paid tribute to the DRC authorities and the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation for their tireless help during this awful case", said the statement.

Two British tourists who were kidnapped in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been freed, the United Kingdom government and Congolese park officials said Sunday.

The tourists' vehicle was ambushed while transporting them from the park about 10 kilometres (6 miles) north of the city of Goma, a park guard told The Associated Press.

Saturday's eighth stage is a 208km ride from Praia a Mare to Montevergine di Mercogliano. A bit stressful at the final, as always, but okay.

Major Guillaume Kaiko Ndjike, the Congolese army's spokesman in North Kivu, said: With Virunga National Park being within our zone of action, we have joined the park rangers for search operations for the people taken hostages.

A park ranger who tried to protect them was shot dead by the attackers. She was one of the Park's 26 female rangers and was highly committed, showing true bravery in her work.

Before taking the tourists, they murdered the park ranger, Rachel Katumwa, 25, who had accompanied them there.

He said: "We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to her family, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident".

N. Korea to destroy nuclear site ahead of USA summit: KCNA
One week before the inter-Korean summit on April 27, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced plans to dismantle the nuclear test site.

The park is home to around a quarter of the world's critically endangered mountain gorillas and other endangered species, as well as lions, elephants, hippos and rare birds.

Although a number of Congolese nationals have been abducted in the park in recent years, it is the first time in almost 20 years that an attempt has been made to seize Western tourists, reports quoted local DRC officials as saying.

Rising violence in recent months across the province of North Kivu has been linked to broader political instability in DR Congo.

Last month, five young rangers and a driver in the park were killed in an ambush.
