UK Supreme Court denies Alfie Evans' appeal, ventilator to be removed Monday

His parents Tom Evans and Kate James are fighting to have him moved to a hospital in Rome

Responding to the Supreme Court's judgment Alder Hey hospital released a statement that said: 'Alfie's parents have done everything in their power to do what they think is best for him even though that is contrary to the views of the doctors.

Pope Francis prayed Sunday for Alfie and others who are suffering from serious infirmities.

In February, Mr Justice Hayden ruled that doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool could stop treating Alfie against the wishes of his parents, after hearings in the Family Division of the High Court in London and Liverpool.

After losing their latest appeal, Alfie's parents are making a further appeal to the Supreme Court and appeal court judges said Alfie would continue to receive treatment pending the Supreme Court decision.

The Rome hospital has reportedly given the same prognosis but would be willing to perform a tracheotomy.

Bishop John Sherrington said the bishops had a "deep awareness of the pain" for Alfie's parents.

Alfie's father, Thomas Evans, met with Francis before the pope's general audience and asked him to make a public appeal about the value of life.

Alfie's parents had relied on a habeas corpus bid to get the court to agree with them that they have the right to withdraw Alfie from the hospital since they are his parents and legal guardians. His parents had petitioned the courts for permission to take him overseas for further medical treatment, and even approached Pope Francis for support.

Tom Evans, 21, and Kate James, 20, have been fighting a legal battle to move their 23-month-old son, who suffers from a degenerative neurological condition, to a the Italian capital for treatment.

The pope had already spoken about Alfie earlier this month. But doctors said his brain was eroded and his condition was irreversible. He said flying Alfie to a foreign hospital would be wrong and pointless. Tom and Kate fought the rulings tooth and nail and filed one appeal after another to allow them to seek treatment for Alfie in the Vatican's Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital, which had offered to treat Alfie.

In what appears to be the end of the road for his parents" battle, the Supreme Court's Lady Hale, Lord Kerr and Lord Wilson, reiterated that "parental rights are not absolute'.
