Nvidia pauses its self-driving vehicle tests in wake of Uber crash

Nvidia says that in addition to being a safer way to test the technology for self-driving cars, the DRIVE Constellation also allows for faster testing; collecting data from billions of miles on virtual roads and innumerable scenarios in much less time than self-driving cars could gather on the road.

The first server runs NVIDIA DRIVE Sim software to simulate a self-driving vehicle's sensors, such as cameras, lidar and radar.

To no surprise, the simulation is powered by NVIDIA GPUs. Driving in these conditions can be scripted, to test an autonomous vehicle's ability to react, without putting other drivers or pedestrians in danger on public roads.

The system is based on two servers with one simulating the vehicle's sensors and the other the vehicle's software that processes the simulation data. "Anybody who thought that they could get by without supercomputers, and simulators, and just vast amounts of data collection, and all those engineers dedicated to making sure that this product is as safe as possible, you and I got to believe that sensibility has completely changed". Huang said. "It takes a billion miles to experience 770 accidents". This happens 30 times a second and validates algorithms to ensure the simulated vehicle is operating correctly. This way companies can test how their cars react to risky situations without endangered people or the product. "NVIDIA's end-to-end platform is the right approach".
