A downbeat start looks in prospect for U.S. markets after president Trump's protectionist move.

US steel companies rose - shares in Nucor, the biggest electric arc furnace maker saw a 3.5% rise, while US Steel shares ended 5.7% higher, while AK Steel was up 9.4%.

Inc.'s stock (CRM) rose 4.7% after the software company's quarterly results beat expectations (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/salesforce-shares-wobbly-as-results-outlook-top-street-view-2018-02-28).

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index closed down 48.73 points, or 0.32 percent, at 15,393.95, its lowest close since February 14. Aerospace giant Boeing lost $12.52, or 3.5 percent, to $349.69.

Among the 100 largest companies in the S&P 500, pain was even more pronounced, with losses approaching 1.8 percent. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 11.89 points, or 0.16 per cent, to 7,284.90.

In Europe, France's CAC 40 lost 2.4 per cent, and Germany's DAX fell 2.3 per cent.

Asian markets closed mixed: Tokyo's Nikkei added 1.1 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng down 0.7 per cent, and China's Shanghai Composite down1.1 per cent.
