Minnie Driver Quits Oxfam Ambassador Role After Prostitution Scandal

Mark Goldring remains in his role as Oxfam chief executive

"The British charity has come under sharp criticism for its handling of misconduct allegations against staff members accused of using prostitutes in Haiti following a devastating 2010 natural disaster".

That has other aid organizations desperately trying to distance themselves from Oxfam GB, fearing they, too, may lose government funding and donations.

The charity faces a potential funding crisis as the UK Government reviews its relationship with the organisation in light of what global development secretary Penny Mordaunt has described as "deeply despicable" allegations.

Yesterday a Scottish Government spokesperson said: "The Scottish Government is deeply concerned by the reports of serious misconduct by Oxfam staff in Haiti".

The International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt revealed she was writing to the charities to insist they spell out what steps they are taking on the issue and confirm they have referred all concerns about specific cases and individuals to the relevant authorities.

She continued: "While investigations have to be completed and any potential criminals prosecuted accordingly, what is clear is that the culture that allowed this to happen needs to change and it needs to change now".

U.S. airstrikes kill Russian military contractors in Syria
Last month, Russian Federation signed an energy agreement with Syria pledging to rebuild the country's electricity infrastructure. Yet there are hundreds if not thousands of contract soldiers in Syria whom the Russian government has never acknowledged.

Oxfam received £31.7 million (35.7 million euros, $43.8 million) from state coffers past year.

Fearing that not every detail of the #Haiti accusations have been "disclosed" by the charity, the #Charity Commission in the United Kingdom has launched an inquiry into the organisation in an attempt to figure out if they covered up previous allegations.

Haiti's Ambassador to the U.K. Bochitt Edmond tells NPR's Morning Edition that his government "is willing and getting ready to take legal action against individuals" involved in the scandal - possibly van Hauwermeiren and implicated members of his staff. "And compels us to take action", she is expected to say.

Marks & Spencer, Heathrow Airport and Visa are among those listed as supporters, and the charity states on its website: "We couldn't achieve what we do without our partners".

The 48-year-old later said on Twitter that she was "devastated by the response" of Oxfam which she had been "raising awareness for since I was nine years old".

It has emerged that a number of people working for the charity paid vulnerable people for sex while working in crisis-hit overseas countries.

The British Red Cross said a "small number of cases of harassment" had been reported in the UK. All of these would be followed up, she told the BBC's Andrew Marr.

It added that it had not received any reports of wrongdoing from Bangladesh, where van Hauwermeiren worked until 2014, but has "begun a process to closely scrutinize the time he was employed by us".

Driver, 48, travelled to Thailand and Cambodia in her role with Oxfam and performed at a charity concert in London in 2004, joining stars such as Chris Martin, Razorlight and REM.

Oxfam is not the first non-governmental organisation to be accused of abuse.

Reportedly, Juan Alberto Fuentes, Chairman of the charity was arrested in Guatemala on Tuesday.

He was the country's former finance minister under ex-President Alvaro Colom, who was arrested on corruption allegations with much of his entire former cabinet.
