Kyle Edmund: 'Hard work paying off'

Stretching himself Kyle Edmund has improved his fitness

British number two Kyle Edmund defeats Italian Andreas Seppi in four sets to reach the last eight of the Australian Open for the first time.

Edmund who is ranked 49th in the world, came back from a set down to win 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-2 6-3 at Melbourne Park.

Elise Mertens extended her winning streak to nine matches with a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory over Petra Martic, reaching the quarterfinals in her first appearance in the Australian Open main draw.

Much as in his first match there was little to separate Edmund and Andreas Seppi - as the only two unseeded players in action on Day Seven. "So it's no different now".

Edmund's progress means that with Jo Konta and Andy Murray's efforts in previous years, this is the ninth straight time that a British player has made the singles quarter finals or better at the Australian Open.

lNeither player had reached a Grand Slam quarter final before and, if Edmund was unaware beforehand, the announcer at the Hisense Arena made sure he knew another interesting fact. "It's certainly my best result at a slam", Edmund said. Also that the hard work is paying off. But it wasn't until he barrelled down a second-serve, 187kph ace - his 25th - at the start of the third that Edmund went ahead in the match for the first time. "I'm playing well, feeling good, and want to keep pushing on as well as I can". Not just I'm playing well but I'm losing or I'm playing well for a set or two. "You've just got to do your own thing and trust it". "I switched it on today, and hopefully next match I can do better".

Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck told SpaceNews that the succesful launch meant the company would move forward with commercial missions. Rocket Lab has five Electron vehicles in production, with the next launch expected to take place in the next few months.

Edmund has one of the biggest forehands in the game and has troubled numerous leading players without quite making it over the line. Edmund broke back and when he broke again to close out the second set, he took charge of the match.

Edmund believes he can win the Australian Open and he knows he has what it takes to beat Dimitrov. He has a huge serve, huge forehand, and he hits very strong the ball. Even when Allertova at game point at 40-0 in the last, Svitolina went on a five-point roll an closed it out with a backhand victor down the line.

After his gruelling five-set duel with Nikoloz Basilashvili in the intense heat on Friday, the key question was how well was Edmund able to recover.

Edmund appeared to struggle to find his range in the first set and was forced to save five break points in the eighth game of the opener.

Edmund insisted fatigue had not been a factor in his sluggish start, saying: "It was just he got off to a good start".

"He was hitting the ball very clean and dictating a lot of points, so in the second set I really had to try and shift the momentum". Was probably doing a little bit more reactive stuff.

"It was really good to turn it around".

The most hotly anticipated match of the men's tournament so far lived up to its billing, and Dimitrov won three tie-breaks to clinch a 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 7-6 (7/4) victory.

Nada survived a near four-hour marathon against pint-sized Argentinian powerhouse Diego Schwartzman, eventually winning 6-3 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-3.

The third seed said: "Playing against Nick is always tricky".

He said: "It was a good test". I played some great matches. But I've won two five setters in this tournament, I'm very happy. "I'm going to need to play with more determination with my forehand in the next match".

When Seppi broke the Edmund serve in the third game of the second set, it looked all over bar the shouting. I believe in my game.
