Google Doodle Celebrates the 2017 Winter Solstice Today

GETTY- STOCK IMAGEWinter Solstice 2017 There will be seven hours and 50 minutes of daylight today

Winter solstice is the shortest day of the year.

CBS News asked University of MA astronomer Stephen Schneider to explain the astronomical cause of the solstice, and he answered seven basic questions about the phenomenon that everyone should know.

Clicking the Google Doodle takes users to a search page for "Winter Solstice 2017", which offers new articles, tweets and other search results on the Winter Solstice. However, that's not the case for everyone. The winter solstice is the precise moment at which the Northern Hemisphere is tilted farthest from the sun.

The prehistoric monument was built to align with the sun on this one morning every year, with the light hitting a special roofbox and illuminating the chamber.

Justin Trudeau Is In Trouble Over a Luxury Trip to the Bahamas
Following its release, Trudeau acknowledged he should have taken precautions and cleared his family vacation prior to the trip. Trudeau's wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, went to the island with friends, no members of the Aga Khan's family were present.

The solstice is the astronomical beginning of winter, even though meteorologists view winter as starting December 1, which is the start of the coldest three months in the Northern Hemisphere. "Around the time of the December solstice, it's your longest noontime shadow of the year".

50 years ago, on December 21, 1967, Irish archaeologist Dr. Michael J.

You can check the precise times in your area using this sunset calendar.

Schneider writes: "Earth takes about 365 1/4 days to orbit the Sun". Chicago will see its sun set at 4:23 p.m. and will experience nine hours and eight minutes of daylight.

Fog warning issued for the entire country
Travellers hoping to fly in or out of the United Kingdom are advised to check before they make their way to an airport. The Met Office's Aidan McGivern said: Foggy scenes are expected for most of the country.

If you don't like the cold, here's a silver lining: Whatever the rest of winter brings, daylight is once again on the upswing. There are two solstices a year. It's a yearly astronomical turning point that humans have celebrated for millennia (just think Stonehenge or the ancient Maya). Our coldest time of the year is nearly a month later, around January 14 each year. "This effect, called 'the lag of the seasons, ' is similar to how when you turn down the heat while you're cooking - the pot won't immediately reach its coolest temperature".

Starting Friday, the sun spends a few more seconds above the horizon each day. And be sure to look at your noontime shadow. The closer you are to the Arctic, the longer the shadows (and the shorter your day) will be.

Why is today the shortest day of the year?

. Sunrise was at 8.03am GMT and sunset is at 3.53pm. The summer solstice is when the sun's rays are directly over the Tropic of Cancer.
